Pirate Party Wins and Enters The European Parliament
The Pirate Party has won a huge victory in the Swedish elections and is marching on to Brussels. After months of campaigning against well established parties, the Pirate Party has gathered enough votes to be guaranteed a seat in the European Parliament.
When the Swedish Pirate Party was founded in early 2006, the majority of the mainstream press were skeptical, with some simply laughing it away. But they were wrong to dismiss this political movement out of hand. Today, the Pirate Party accomplished what some believed to be the impossible, by securing a seat in the European Parliament.
With 99.9% of the districts counted the Pirates have 7.1 percent of the votes, beating several established parties. This means that the Pirate Party will get at least one, but most likely two of the 18 (+2) available seats Sweden has at the European Parliament.
When we asked Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge about the outcome, he told TorrentFreak: Weve felt the wind blow in our sails. Weve seen the polls prior to the election. But to stand here, today, and see the figures coming up on that screen What do you want me to say? Ill say anything
Together, we have today changed the landscape of European politics. No matter how this night ends, we have changed it, Falkvinge said. This feels wonderful. The citizens have understood its time to make a difference. The older politicians have taken apart young peoples lifestyle, bit by bit. We do not accept that the authorities mass-surveillance, he added.
Rick Falkvinge celebrating tonights election win
The turnout at the elections is 43 percent, a little higher than the at the 2004 elections. This would mean that roughly 200,000 Swedes have voted for the Pirate Party. This is a huge increase compared to the national elections of 2006 where the party got 34,918 votes.
Both national and international press have gathered in Stockholm where the Pirate Party is celebrating its landmark victory.
Falkvinge answering questions
At least partially, The Pirate Party puts its increased popularity down to harsh copyright laws and the recent conviction of the people behind The Pirate Bay. After the Pirate Bay verdict, Pirate Party membership more than tripled and they now have over 48,000 registered members, more than the total number of votes they received in 2006.
With their presence in Brussels, the Pirate Party hopes to reduce the abuses of power and copyright at the hands of the entertainment industries, and make those activities illegal instead. On the other hand they hope to legalize file-sharing for personal use.
Arrrr
Its great fun to be a pirate right now, Christian Engström, Vice Chairman of the Pirate Party told the press when he arrived.
Update: Sweden has 20 seats, but until the Lisbon treaty passes only 18 with voting rights. This means that the Pirate Party will have 2 seats.
Update: In Germany the Pirate Party got approximately 1 percent of the votes, not enough for a seat in the European Parliament. Andreas Popp, lead candidate for the German Pirate Party is pleased and told TorrentFreak: This was the first time, we ran for the European elections. And although many voters have hardly known us, we got a great result. This shows, that many citizens identify themselves with our goals. I want to thank all people who supported us, we could not have done that without them. We have fulfilled our minimal goal of 0,5%. Now we can start up for real!
Update: Heres a feature article on the election night and outcome.

Á árinu 2006 tók Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn á móti tveimur styrkjum, samtals að fjárhæð 55.000.000, sem ákveðið hefur verið að endurgreiða. Í dag verður gengið frá fyrstu greiðslu, samtals að fjárhæð 6.875.000.
Þetta kemur fram í tilkynningu sem Bjarni Benediktsson sendir fjölmiðlum í dag. Þá segir að ákvörðun um endurgreiðslu byggi á því að fjárhæð styrkjanna hafi verið umfram það sem hæfilegt geti talist þegar um styrki fyrritækja við stjórnmálastarfsemi sé að ræða.
Endurgreiddir verða styrkir að fjárhæð 30.000.000 til Stoða hf. (áður FL Group hf.) og 25.000.000 til NBI hf. (áður Landsbankinn hf.) með jöfnum greiðslum á hverju ári næstu 7 árin, án vaxta- og verðbóta," segir í tilkynningunni.

Bush's Shocking Biblical Prophecy Emerges: God Wants to "Erase" Mid-East Enemies "Before a New Age Begins"
The revelation this month in GQ Magazine that Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary embellished top-secret wartime memos with quotations from the Bible prompts a question. Why did he believe he could influence President Bush by that means?
The answer may lie in an alarming story about George Bush's Christian millenarian beliefs that has yet to come to light.
In 2003 while lobbying leaders to put together the Coalition of the Willing, President Bush spoke to France's President Jacques Chirac. Bush wove a story about how the Biblical creatures Gog and Magog were at work in the Middle East and how they must be defeated.
In Genesis and Ezekiel Gog and Magog are forces of the Apocalypse who are prophesied to come out of the north and destroy Israel unless stopped. The Book of Revelation took up the Old Testament prophesy:
"And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them."
Bush believed the time had now come for that battle, telling Chirac:
"This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people's enemies before a New Age begins".
The story of the conversation emerged only because the Elyse Palace, baffled by Bush's words, sought advice from Thomas Romer, a professor of theology at the University of Lausanne. Four years later, Romer gave an account in the September 2007 issue of the university's review, Allez savoir. The article apparently went unnoticed, although it was referred to in a French newspaper.
The story has now been confirmed by Chirac himself in a new book, published in France in March, by journalist Jean Claude Maurice. Chirac is said to have been stupefied and disturbed by Bush's invocation of Biblical prophesy to justify the war in Iraq and "wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs".
In the same year he spoke to Chirac, Bush had reportedly said to the Palestinian foreign minister that he was on "a mission from God" in launching the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan and was receiving commands from the Lord.
There can be little doubt now that President Bush's reason for launching the war in Iraq was, for him, fundamentally religious. He was driven by his belief that the attack on Saddam's Iraq was the fulfilment of a Biblical prophesy in which he had been chosen to serve as the instrument of the Lord.
Many thousands of Americans and Iraqis have died in the campaign to defeat Gog and Magog. That the US President saw himself as the vehicle of God whose duty was to prevent the Apocalypse can only inflame suspicions across the Middle East that the United States is on a crusade against Islam.
There is a curious coda to this story. While a senior at Yale University George W. Bush was a member of the exclusive and secretive Skull & Bones society. His father, George H.W. Bush had also been a "Bonesman", as indeed had his father. Skull & Bones' initiates are assigned or take on nicknames. And what was George Bush Senior's nickname? "Magog".

Segir viðvaninga hafa stjórnað seðlabankanum
Tæknilegt gjaldþrot Seðlabankans mun kosta hvert mannsbarn á Íslandi á aðra milljón. Glæfraleikur fyrrverandi bankastjórnar Seðlabankans mun því verða stærsti einstaki skellurinn sem lendir á íslenskum skattgreiðendum, líklega tvöfalt stærri en Icesave segir höfundur bókarinnar Sofandi að feigðarósi.
Ólafur Arnarson, höfundur metsölubókarinnar Sofandi að feigðarósi, skrifar úttekt um tæknilegt gjaldþrot Seðlabankans á pressan.is. Þar kemur fram hörð gagnrýni á lánveitingar Seðlabankans sem voru án haldbærra trygginga heldur í gegnum hinu svokölluðu endurhverfu viðskipti þar sem lánað var í gegnum þriðja aðila.
Hann segir rekstrarþrot Seðlabankans skjóta skökku við í alþjóðlegu samhengi. Á meðan aðrir seðlabankar hafi haft haldbær veð hafi bankinn tapað stórum fjárhæðum. Ólafur segir tapið vera í kringum 350 milljarðar króna sem falli óskipt á ríkissjóð og þar með íslenska skattgreiðendur. Gönuhlaup fyrrverandi bankastjórnar Seðlabankans muni því kosta hvert mannsbarn á Íslandi á aðra milljón.
Jafnvel þó Icesave verði tvöfalt á við það sem skilanefnd Landsbankans vonast til að verði, þá yrði það samt vel innan við helmingurinn af því tjóni sem skellur á okkur útaf glórulausum útlánum seðlabankans," segir Ólafur.
Ólafur segir að fyrrverandi bankastjórn Seðlabankans beri fulla ábyrgð.
Þetta sýnir að þarna voru viðvaningar á ferð. Þessir menn kunnu ekki að stýra banka, hvorki seðlabanka né öðrum bönkum. Það lánar enginn banki gríðarlegar upphæðir án þess að hafa haldbær veð á móti, án þess að hafa einhverjar tryggingar í höndunum."
Beint í meginmál síðu.

Food Wrapper Coating Found in Human Blood
May 15, 2009 -- To the growing list of chemicals showing up in human blood, a new study adds compounds that make food wrappers grease-proof.
Called diPAPs, these chemicals are fairly new and scientists don't yet know if they are harmful to human health. But diPAPs break down into another worrisome chemical, called PFOA, which may be carcinogenic.
"The take-home message is that some chemicals that make our lives easier, better and more satisfying end up in our bloodstream with unknown toxicological consequences," said Scott Mabury, a chemist at the University of Toronto. "We should be smart enough to design chemicals that do what we want them to do without causing a chemical pollution problem."
The new study builds on accumulating and worrisome research into a class of compounds called perfluorochemicals. PFOA (perfuorooctanoic acid) is a major one. PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) is another.
PFOA and PFOS are resistant to oil and water, which makes them perfect for use as liners on carpets, nonstick pans, microwave popcorn bags, clothes, electronics and pizza boxes, among many other applications. The problem is that these compounds end up in the environment, our food and our bodies.

Scientists have found perfluorochemicals in every human blood sample they've tested, Mabury said, often at relatively high levels. In animal experiments, PFOA and PFOS have been linked to cancer, developmental problems and other issues.
Polar bears in the Arctic harbor particularly high levels of PFOA, which confused scientists at first but then led them to discover a large number of precursor chemicals that can escape their sources, fly through the air and end up in animals in remote locations, where the chemicals break down into PFOA.
Mabury was interested in learning more about an overlooked precursor: diPAPs (polfluoroalkyl phosphoric acid diesters), which are used to make food wrappers resistant to grease. These chemicals were designed to stick to the paper, but Mabury suspected that they were getting out of the wrappers and into the food. Because diPAPs break down quickly, he thought that evidence of human contamination would be difficult to find.
The researchers used a highly sensitive, $500,000 mass spectrometer to analyze 20 samples that combined the blood of 10 people. To their surprise, their results, showed levels of diPAPs that were just as high as levels of PFOA in human blood.
It's the first time anyone has found these chemicals in our bodies. And the findings, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, suggest that diPAPs are contributing a significant portion of the PFOA found in human blood, Mabury said -- maybe 10 percent or more.
What's more, Mabury said, the intermediate steps in that breakdown process produce molecules that have been shown in experiments to be 10,000 times more toxic than PFOA itself.
"In going from diPAPs to PFOA, you go through things that have been entirely ignored by essentially all of the academic research community," Mabury said. "This is not something you want to be a common contaminant in humans. Certainly not at the concentrations its at."
The team also found high levels of diPAPs in sewage sludge and paper pulp, suggesting that these chemicals might be getting into the water supply and onto farm fields, as well.
Already, the Environmental Protection Agency has convinced 3M, the only U.S. manufacturer of PFOS to stop using that chemical. The EPA has also been encouraging companies to reduce emissions and find alternatives for PFOA and many of its precursor molecules as they further investigate the chemical. The new work suggests that diPAPs themselves need more attention.
"We were told before that PFOS and PFOA don't do anything," said John Giesy, an environmental chemist and toxicologist at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. "Well, in fact, they do. They're quite potent toxicants through a couple mechanisms of action. The question for me and people like me now is: What do these chemicals do?"
So far, no one has studied the health effects to humans of exposure to food-wrapper chemicals or their breakdown products. But, Giesy said, it's worth looking into right away.
"I don't know if it's time to panic, and I doubt it is," he said. "But we really don't know what it's doing. It's something we need to worry about. It's something we need to find out about."
